Nick Spino: Downward Spiral for the Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles fans have nothing to be excited about. The "dream team" has fallen to a below .500 record on the season. Their struggles seem to be consistent, which has made this a season to forget.

During the offseason, the Eagles made a huge splash in free agency, signing top free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and defensive tackles Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin.

During the preseason, analysts predicted that the Eagles would one of the best teams in the NFL this year, but things took an unexpected twist. Contract issues with DeSean Jackson have been a distraction for the Eagle's top wide receiver, as he has not been as productive this season. Also, injuries to QB Michael Vick, WR Jeremy Maclin, and CB Dominique Rogers-Cromartie over the course of the season have hurt the Eagles' productivity.

The Eagles defense has never been worse. They have the worst red zone defense in the NFL. Turnovers have been a negative factor for this team, as they lead the NFL in this category.

Andy Reid is in serious danger of losing his position as head coach due to the Eagles lack of success. He has led this team since 1999, appearing in one Super Bowl, a loss to the New England Patriots. He has not been as successful in the playoffs over the years. Andy Reid hasn't been a part of such a poor record since 2005, when the Eagles went 6-10. (As of Dec. 16, their record is 5-8).

Problems have caused the Eagles to likely fall out of the playoff picture. To make the playoffs, they need to win the rest of their games this season and the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants need to lose a significant amount of their remaining games. Since that is highly unlikely, their hope is to receive a high draft pick in this year's NFL Draft. Maybe with some better offseason decisions, they will again be recognized as one of the NFL's elite teams.
