Movie Review: Arbitrage

Arbitrage

By Jeremy Cooper
Layout Editor

Director: Nicolas Jarecki

Starring: Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth, Brit Marling

Synopsis: Robert Miller (Gere), a billionaire hedge fund magnate, is involved in two major crimes: sales fraud and involuntary manslaughter. The film shows his increasingly desperate attempts to cover up his actions from his associates, family, and a sharp-eyed detective (Roth).

Pros: Strong performances from a good cast, particularly Gere who gives a solid performance. Keeps the audience invested in both the plot and characters. Offers some revealing commentary on the inside lives of the 1%.

Cons: As far as thrillers go, there isn’t really anything mind-blowing or truly original. It's decent weekend entertainment, and not really all that memorable. Consensus: While not exactly original or groundbreaking, Arbitrage makes for a decent thriller, thanks largely to some solid writing and a strong leading performance by Richard Gere.

Rating: 7/10
